The route

The first day we drive from Guilin or Yangshuo to Chengyang,
where we will arrive in the afternoon.
In the valley of Chengyang their are seven small villages along a lovely river. To cross the river they build several roofed wooden bridges, called wind and rain bridges. In every village on the town square there are wooden towers.
In the tower there is a drum that in case of meetings or danger is beaten. The 2nd day we hit the road from Chengyang to Zhaoxing. The road is not paved, but the scenery makes up for any discomfort.
Zhaoxing is just across the border in the province of Guizhou. It is the biggest Dong village in China and has five drum towers. With any luck we stop at a market. This is not only the place to buy and sell. It is also the place to meet friends and relatives from other villages.

On the forth day we drive back in the direction of Guilin, but we turn of the road to the Longji rice terraces.
It took the Zhuang people 500 years to turn the steep slopes into terraced rice fields.
The colors of the fields depend on the time of the year, but the lines in the landscape are always fascinating.
We will stay in the village PingAn that can only be reached on food. (20 minutes walk) The last morning we might have time for a long walk before we goto Guilin or Yangshuo.

The minorities of Guizhou: Guiyang to Guilin

(Min. 6 max 12 days) Traveling trough mountains and along rivers we meet several different minority people, like the Miao, the Dong, the Zhuang and the Yao.
We stay in standard hotels or simple but comfortable, cozy wooden guesthouses, with shared facilities. This route can be traveled in a 6 days, but it is better to set side aside a few more days. In that way you have time for extra stops on the way, and some detours to other villages.
Guiyang is the capital of the Guizhou province and has good air connections, with the rest of China, as Kunming and Guilin. The exact route depends on market days. Most markets in this area follow the lunar calendar, therefor we need to do some calculations to find out on what days the markets are on our calender.

The route

Guizhou is still a poor province in central/south of China. In this province you will find a lot of different minorities.
The life in the more remote areas is changing rapidly. Over the last few years there are more and more roads are being constructed. Many of the villages are now for the first time connected to the outside world. Many roads are still not paved and therefore dusty during dry times and muddy during rainy times.
Even though the road situation is improving, still there are not that many tourists visiting this area.

This trip starts in Guiyang, de the capital of the province. The first stop will be Kaili though, a rapidly developing city. Kaili is the center of Miao peoples area. In the city there is a nice minority museum. Kaili is also a good place to buy handicrafts, like weaving and other textiles, because you can find materials from all different villages.

From Kaili we will go into the mountains. From very simple and traditional villages to more modern townships.
We have our own car, so if we see a nice market, a fantastic view or just want to stretch our legs, we'll stop. The first day or so we will mainly see Miao people, but you will notice that every village has it's own costumes.
If you have more time, we can also visit Xijiang, the biggest Miao village in the area. The road to Rongjiang crosses a few mountain passes. Huge terraced farming areas allow for breathtaking views. Rongjiang is the first bigger city in the territory of Dong-minority. The city borders a river, but doesn't have much attraction;
just outside there is a beautiful old dong village.
From Rongjiang we drive to Zhaoxing.
This is the largest Dong village in the area.
It has 5 drum towers, en and many wind and rain bridges,
in different sizes. The surroundings allows for nice walks. We stay in a small, nice, simple, but comfortable timber guesthouse. From here on we follow the trip, 'The Other side of Guilin' to Sanjiang, Chengyang, Longji, and Guilin.
